A TikTok challenge has resulted in vehicle thefts and even tragic fatalities. Hyundai has proactively developed an anti-theft software update to help. Our Hyundai dealership highlights the steps you should take to protect your vehicle.

What’s the TikTok Challenge?

Last summer, a TikTok user posted a video showing their followers how to hotwire a Hyundai or Kia vehicle. The challenge has provoked thousands of thefts. And, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), over 14 crashes and eight fatalities have been reported.

Why are the Vehicles Being Stolen?

Hyundai and Kia vehicles from specific model years are being targeted because they lack an electronic immobilizer. An immobilizer is a safety device that prevents a car from starting without the appropriate key or key fob.

What Can I Do to Help?

Hyundai has developed theft-deterrent software for millions of vehicles that lack an immobilizer. They are providing it free of charge to Hyundai vehicle owners. You can update your software at our dealership in less than an hour.

What Does the Software Update Do?

This theft deterrent software is designed to update the theft alarm software logic, which extends the length of the alarm sound from 30 seconds to one minute. It also requires that the key is in the ignition for the vehicle to turn on.

Is My Vehicle Affected?

Hyundai models dating as far back as 2011 can be affected. (Although all Hyundai models after November 2021 come standard with an anti-theft immobilizer.) You can check the status of your vehicle at
